Archaeology Notes

NX96NE 33 96446 66832

The ruined fragment of a grange or barn still survives within the stackyard of Shambellie Grange farm (NX 964 668). It consists of a single gable, 13 ft 6 ins wide, 11 ft 3 ins high, and 3 ft 4 ins thick, built of rough granite boulders and containing an arched opening, above which is a panel divided into two parts. The upper part is dated 1649, while the lower division shows two bishop's croziers and either two hearts or stars, now very indefinite. A finial in the form of a miniature obelisk surmounts the apex of the gable. (This grange would doubtless have been associated with the nearby Cistercian Sweetheart Abbey, which, however, was secularised in 1624 - see NX96NE 9.00)

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911
