Archaeology Notes

NX96NE 12 975 663

Lengths of dressed bog-timber, 6 to 7 feet long are ploughed up regularly over the whole area of a recently drained wet hollow, 30 yards in diameter, in the bend of the March Burn on Landis Farm, near Nocktour Wood, by Mr Carruthers of Landis Farm.

A E Truckell 1956

Area centred NX 9753 6638. The general area in which these lengths of bog timber are found was pointed out by Mr Carruthers. Ploughing still occasionally turns up further lengths.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 8 July 1964.

The discovery of 'lengths of dressed bog-timber' has been reported about 400m SE of Landis farmhouse in the haughland of the lower Nith, and at an altitude of 10m OD. The timbers were reported to be cut into standard lengths of about 2.5m; some of them bore toolmarks.

A E Truckell 1956; R J C Mowat 1996.
