OS 6" map (1971)
Ingleston motte, a mound of earth and stones upon a natural rock outcrop, is 12 ft to 14 ft high. The flat elliptical summit, with a slight indication of a parapet on its W side, measures 86 ft by 55 ft. A slight ridge 12 ft out from the SE side of the mound may possibly indicate the edge of the counterscarp of a ditch, now filled in.

This large motte must be that of Richard, son of Troite, a Cumberland landowner, who was granted the lands of Lochenelo here about 1170. Occupation probably covered the late 12th and most of the 13th century; there do not appear to be any later structures on the motte. Several pieces of 13th century pottery were found on the surface here in 1966.
A E Truckell and J Williams 1967
Generally as described by the previous authorities, this motte measures about 50.0 m NW-SE by 38.0m transversely with a maximum height of 4.5 m. Its oval, flat top measures 25.5 m NW-SE by 15.3 m transversely. The mound is now rather mutilated with its sides covered with gorse and outcrop rock here and there. There is now only a vague indication of a bank on the W side, and vague indication of the possible counterscarp of a ditch on the SE.
Revised at 25".
