Cavens Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1946)

Cavers or Cavens was a castellated house, similar to Wreaths (Kirkcud. 51 NE1) and is said to have belonged to, and been occupied by, the Regent Morton in the late 16th century.

It was occupied until about 1800, after which it was robbed, until in 1893 very few traces remained.

NSA 1845 (T Grierson); S Arnott 1895

Although the NSA gives the name as 'Cavens', the proprietor, in 1893, believed 'Cavers' to be the proper spelling.

Cavens Castle is in ruinous condition.

D MacCrimmon 1924

There is no trace of an antiquity either near or incorporated in the present building at NX 9577 5716 and no further information was obtained locally. The name "Cavens Castle" is correct. (A E Truckell, Dumfries Museum)
