Archaeology Notes

NX95NE 25 98 58

A tradition existed about fifty years ago that a chapel stood on the lands attached to Chapelgrove (NX 9793 5905). (Arnott suggests that this may have been St Bein's Church.) A short distance away is an old well, named Lady Well, which has given its name to some adjoining houses (Ladywell: NX 9811 5860).

This was in all probability a holy well, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, though no tradition now exists regarding it; it was in use until a few years ago when drainage operations in an adjoining field stopped the supply of water.

S Arnott 1895.
