Archaeology Notes

NX89SW 15 8196 9392 to 7339 9337.

There are remains of a Roman road leading from the Doon (NX 8196 9392) to Drumloff (NX 7339 9337) and crossing the Shinnel above Stenhouse (NX 7997 9309), along the line of which Roman urns containing calcined bones have been found.

NSA 1841 (R Wilson)

Nothing conclusive is visible on A.Ps. (541/A/529, 3277-9)

The Shinnel calley is an obvious E-W communication route but there is no evidence of Ro work in association with the existing pack-ways and modern road system, along the route described. A terraced pack-way is traceable from NX 822 933 to NX 815 932 where it joins the modern road as far as Tynron Church. Here it continues as a track to the 6" sheet edge in Auchengibbert Wood at NX 800 932.
