(NX 8032 9785) Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

This enigmatic feature is a plateau overlooking a deep glen. It is encircled by two large natural mounds. On the S side, at the base of the mound on the exterior, is a distinctly artificial terrace along the side of the glen, which is continued round the E to the N side, where it lies some 15ft below the crest of the N mound. Levelling at the W side, cutting through the mound on the N and reaching the face of the glen to the S, is modern.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912

The 'earthwork' to the south of Arkland House is almost certainly a natural geological feature. It is a knoll, with steeply sloping south and west sides, that has a large depression approximately 50m by 30m and 10m deep in its top. The spine of a ridge from the west joins this top. Terraces on the east, west and south sides of this knoll appear to be the result of landscaping. It is of no apparent archaeological significance.

Visited by OS (TRG) 16 December 1977.
