Archaeology Notes

NX89NE 82 869 977

Excavations in 1989 in the area between enclosures NX89NE 59 and NX89NE 60 revealed two cists with urned cremations on top of a slight rise. Both had been badly damaged by ploughing.

D A Johnston 1989; 1990a.

Cropmarks of a square, double ditched Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure (NX89NE 59), a Roman temporary camp (NX89NE 4) and another sub-rectangular enclosure (NX89NE 60) were excavated in advance of road building. All the monuments were plough damaged. Three cremation burials were found to the north of the square enclosure. Two were contained in collard urns, which were found in small cists. The third was in a pit and unaccompanied (NX89NE 83)
