(NX 8220 8968) Maxwelton House (home of Annie Laurie of the song) is largely representative of the first half of the 17th century, and incorporates the remains of a still earlier tower. It forms three sides of a courtyard open to the S.
The oldest portion is at the S end of the W wing, the rest of which has been modernised. The remaining two sides are 17th c work, save for the upper storey which has been renewed. The house has two storeys and an attic; save for some vaulted ceilings it has been entirely modernised.
N Tranter 1965
Maxwelton House (name confirmed) (Mrs Stenhouse, Maxwelton House, Moniaive) is generally as described by Tranter. The upper storey on the north and east wings however was added between 1868 and 1875 and not renewed (Maxwelton House Trust). The house was modernised during the Victorian period but the majority of these additions were removed during restoration work between 1968 and 1973.
