(NX 8641 8567) Mote (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A natural hillock which has been converted into a motte by excavating a ditch around it, except on the E where the ground is low and wet. In the W, the ditch, which has a slight mound on its counterscarp, is 34' wide and 8' deep, decreasing to 22' wide on the S. The flat summit of the hillock is 34' broad, with a shoulder c 100' long. It belonged to a branch of the Cunninghams, relatives of the Earls of Glencairn.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912; R W Feachem 1956; J Gladstone 1951

A probable motte, generally as described. In profile the highest point of the mound on the N bears a superficial resemblance to an artificially constructed motte but on examination only the ditch is artificial. A causeway across the ditch in the N appears to be modern.

Surveyed at 1/2500.
