Archaeology Notes

NX86SW 20 826 608.

On the flat plain above the 7.6m contour, 0.8km SW of Dalbeattie, between the Water of Urr and the Dalbeattie Burn, where a fence line and the Reed weel farm lane cross the A 711, is a Roman temporary camp of approximately 15 hectares, set on a NE-SW axis. Ditches discernible, notably on the NW side.

J and J Andrews 1982

In October 1983, a trial trench dug on the SE side of the site, under the direction of Professor St Joseph, failed to establish the presence of archaeological features at that point. The site therefore remains unconfirmed.

Not a Roman Temporary Camp.

Information from RCAHMS (GSM), 20 November 1985.

A local farmer who grew up at Meikle, just to the NE, recalls that in World War 2, around 1942-3, there was a temporary army camp on the site. First used by British troops, and later by Italian prisoners-of-war. The camp was tented accommodation, and was abandoned after being flooded-out by a high neap tide in 1943. Most of the Italians were transferred to the larger permanent camp at Haugh of Urr.
