Archaeology Notes

NX86SW 15 8282 6247.

A cairn is indicated on the OS map at the south extremity of the wood, which is situated towards the south-west end of Little Firthead. "At approximately the point marked, there is a triangular mass of stones contained by the outer wall of the wood and two other walls built against it. If this was the cairn it was evidently a large one; but what its condition was previous to the stones being piled up in the enclosure it is impossible to say."

(OS 25" 1893 shows a mound of stones, un-named, at NX 8282 6247).

RCAHMS 1914

The mass of stones at NX 8282 6247 is contained by the boundary wall of the plantation, the field dyke, and the wall of an old sheepfold which has now disappeared. The stones are mostly small and fill the area to the height of the enclosing walls. If this was a cairn there is no indication of it having extended outside the triangle. It is possible that this accumulation of stone is the result of stone clearance from the adjoining arable fields.
