(NX 8547 6246) Barclosh Castle (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Barclosh Castle has been a simple oblong on plan, measuring c.15' in width between walls averaging 3' thick. Parts of the NE and SW walls remain for a length of 18 and 10' respectively from the inner surface of the SE wall. The NW and SE walls are entirely demolished except for a small part at the S angle which contains a single window jamb, the only portion of hewn work remaining. The walls are not more than 12' high. The building may possibly date from the end of the 16th century.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911

All that remains of Barclosh Castle (name confirmed by Mrs Maxwell, Barclosh Farm) is a 6.0m long stretch of the south-east wall. It is 1.2m thick, 8.0m high and now forms part of a modern field wall. Immediately to the north-west is a large mound of boulders and masonry, but there is no trace of any other walling.

Visited by OS (BS) 25 January 1978
