Archaeology Notes

NX86NE 21 873 682.

In May 1984 a split oak log was discovered during drainage operations about 300m ESE of Drumcoltran farmsteading; it had probably been disturbed by previous drainage works. The log measures 6.2m in length and about 0.35m in breadth; it was originally identified as a possible log boat, but there is no sign of hollowing. The log was taken to a storage tank at the premises of ICI in Dumfries.

Information from D Lockwood 15 May 1984.

In 1984 a split oak log was discovered during drainage work about 400m E of Drumcoltran Tower (NX86NE 2), and initially entered the press as the remains of a possible logboat. Further examination revealed no evidence of human workmanship or of antiquity. The timber was, nonetheless, placed in a tank for conservation.

Scotsman 1984; information from Mr P Hill; R J C Mowat 1996.
