Archaeology Notes

NC80NE 9 870 068.

Some 1 1/4 miles NW of Wester Clynekirkton is a group of small mounds "of the usual type".

RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.

This group of mounds are stone clearance heaps, about twelve in all, of a minor field system, situated at NC 870 068 on a gently SW-facing hillslope in open moorland. They are scattered over an area of one hectare, and neither cultivation plots nor hut circles can be seen.

Visited by OS (E G C) 17 July 1961 and (J B) 9 December 1975.

40. Loch Brora. On either side of the old road which leads from Oldtown to Wester Clynekirkton, from about ½ m. SE. of the former place, for a considerable distance are numerous mounds of the usual small type [NC80NE 5], and another group [NC80NE 9] is situated about 1¼ m. NW. of the latter place.
