In 1922, whilst laying out garden paths at Cairngill (on the site of a previous house called Craig Bittern), a pygmy vessel, three fragments of a cinerary urn and some cremated bone were found in a cairn or mound at no great depth below the surface.
J M Corrie 1929
The pygmy vessel, which is in Dumfries Museum, was found near the outer edge of the mound, almost on natural ground level, surrounded by a small rectangular mound of stones, and was therefore probably in situ; it was confidently assumed that it was a secondary burial.
J M Corrie 1928
Some 35 years before, a cist was discovered in the same mound.
A Morrison 1968
There is no trace of this cairn which stood on a slight hillock at NX 8927 5547 (Mr Haslam, Cairngill)
