Archaeology Notes

NX85NW 5 8175 4845

The copper mines in the vicinity of Airds Farm have been unproductive for a long period. The shaft runs more than 100 fathoms into the face of a hill close to the shore, and has been hitherto wrought with great labour and expenses. Near to the mines is a ponderous rocking stone.

M Harper 1896.

An area of disturbed ground indicates the site of the mines.

Visited by OS (JP) 12 August 1969.

A disused copper mine and sheepfold, both of which are depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Kirkcudbrightshire 1895, Sheet lvi) and the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978), have been recorded on oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 2000) lying about 400m S of Airds. The sheepfold abuts a field boundary and the copper mine is defined by an area of disturbed ground.

Information from RCAHMS (KMM) 14 December 2004.
