OS 6" map (1957)
This name applies to a "tolerably large" mound said by Mr McTurk (of Hastings Hall, Moniaive) to be the remains of an ancient fortification. It is from this that the name "Peelton" (applied to the farm on which the peel stands) is derived.
OS Name Book 1856
The feature portrayed on the OS 25" (County Series) is a flat-topped knoll on steep S-facing slopes. Forming a partially isolated terrace on the hillside, the surface area is approximately 35.0m E-W by 15.0m N-S. No definite artificial work is visible, but recently felled forestry obscures most of the knoll. Uprooted stumps reveal nothing significant.
Visited by OS (JRL), 2 September 1977.
