(NX 7786 9092) Cross (NR)

OS 25" map (1899)

Moniaive market cross is a column, 11ins square and 8ft long with chamfered edges, set on a drum of masonry 6ft in diameter and 4ft 6ins high. It supports a cap 12ins square, dated 1638, surmounted by a modern stone ball. An illustration of 1790 (J Corrie 1910) shows the cross standing on a square base, and capped by a stone dial. Jougs which were attached to the base of the cross were removed during alterations in 1812.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912; J W Small 1900

NX 7785 9092. The cross is as described except that the stone ball is now missing, and the column appears modern. There is no indication or local knowledge that the circular masonry base is a late feature, and the chamfered appearance of the base in the Small illustration is questionable.
