(Name centred NX 7604 6170) Carlingwark Thorn (NR)

OS 6" map (1853)

A large white thornbush, very old apparently and very remarkable, is situated near the south side of Carlingwark Cottages. Formerly there were three old bushes at this place which were called the Three Thorns of Carlingwark. Two of these are long since decayed or cut down and the above one remains still in vigorous and healthy state.

James II marching into Galloway at the head of a numerous army, took up a position at the Three Thorns of Carlingwork near the place where the town of Castle Douglas stands.

The position of this thorn if not clear on the first edition OS 6". It is possible that it stands at NX 76076168 where a small enclosure is shown or in the small coppice at NX 7614 6170.

Name Book 1847; NSA 1845

Local enquiries failed to reveal any knowledge of the whereabouts of the Carlingwark Thorn. Inspection of the area specified by ONB located three old thorn trees or bushes in the pasture field to the North of Carlingwark. These three trees were located at NX 7610 171, NX 7608 6170, NX 7608 6165, but it is impossible without further information to designate any one of them as the Carlingwark Thorn.
