(Approx. NX 763 609). A large bronze cauldron containing about 100 metal objects, exclusive of indeterminate fragments, was found in Carlingwark Loch about 1866, near Fir Island. The hoard of tools, equipment and fragments of iron and bronze, is probably Romano-Belgic, of the late first or early second centuries AD, and, although it could be a smith's hoard, it is more likely to have been a votive offering.

The cauldron, with eighty-six of the iron implements found in it, is held in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) under accession number DW 1.

None of the iron-work would be out of place in a Roman fort in Scotland and a late first or early second century date would appear most probable. The hoard was dredged from the bottom of the loch by fishermen in 1866.
