Archaeology Notes

NX75SW 3 7023 5450.

(NX 7023 5450) Dun's Wa's (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

The site of a house on the E bank of the River Dee, where it is said Mary, Queen of Scots stayed while the bridge she had just crossed (NX75SW 2) was being broken down to delay pursuit after the battle of Langside. At that time, the house was occupied by a person called Dun, hence the name. This tradition is contradicted by the Memoirs of Lord Herries, who accompanied the queen. They state that she travelled by another route (M Harper 1896).

Name Book 1849; NSA 1845 (J M'Millan)

A dam now occupies the site of the house. No further information. Name not confirmed.

Visited by OS (DWR) 10 February 1972.

A single unroofed building annotated 'site of' is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Kirkcudbrightshire 1852, sheet 44). Tongland Dam now occupies the site of the building as shown on the OS 1:10000 map (1982).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 27 June 2000.
