(NX 7155 5051) Bombie Castle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

The site of an old castle, formerly the residence of the McClellands of Bombie in the 13th-16th centuries (SDD List). It was situated on the top of a precipitous bank beside Gribdae Burn, and there is what seems to be a much defaced, scarcely visible ditch round its S side. It seems to have been a fortified residence. A passage 18" deep and 2' wide, along which a rod could be pushed for 9', was found at this site by the farmer's son, it may be a drain connected with the castle.

Name Book 1849; A E Truckell 1956

There is no trace of a building or other artificial work here.

Visited by OS (DWR) 14 February 1972.
