Archaeology Notes

N2X75SE 5 792 512.

(Area: NX 792 512 ) There are four cairns in the area to the SW of the road between the schoolhouse and the cemetery at Auchencairn.

'A', about 80 yds from the road, is grass covered and measures 50ft in diameter and 5ft high.

'B', on a slight hill 250 yds to the S, is 80ft in diameter and 4ft high.

'C', 100 yds to the W, is 60ft in diameter and 5-6ft high.

'D', 200 yds S of 'A', is 27ft in diameter and 3ft high. It is a stony mound but the presence of outcropping rock nearby suggests that it may be a field clearance mound.

RCAHMS 1914

'B', at NX 7915 5108, and 'C', at NX 7903 5104, are each grass covered round cairns 1.7m high. 'A', at NX 7823 5130, has been bulldozed but its site is recognisable as a parch mark. There is no trace of 'D'.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (JP) 14 August 1969.
