Archaeology Notes

NX68SW 6 6087 8319.

NX 6085 8325. During drainage operations in September 1961 at Barskeoch Mains, a roughly crescentic mound some 35ft long by 3ft 6 ins in height was found to consist of small angular burnt stones mixed with blackened earth containing fragments of wood charcoal. The mound has now been destroyed. Truckell states that this mound is comparable with one at Rue (NX98SW 2) which was shown by excavation to be a late medieval corn drying kiln.

H C Nisbet 1961; A E Truckell 1961

There is no evidence of a mound in the area of the map reference; however, the farmer stated that its ploughed-out site was further to the south at NX 6087 8319.
