(NX 6420 8166) Chapel (NR) (Site of).

OS 6" map (1957)

The site of a chapel and associated graveyard (Chapel Yard) on Bogue farm. It is supposed to have been built in the time of Pope Gregory VII, a stone, now at Bogue Cottage, inscribed POPE G7 having been found in the immediate vicinity.

Name Book 1849; OSA 1794

There is no mention of this church or chapel in history. The site can still be seen, also the foundation of the fence around the churchyard, 1/2 acre in size, and the foundation of the walls of the priest's house on Priest's Knowe (Priest's Butt: NX 642 816).

J Barbour 1897

Two stone axes, found built into the chapel walls, are in private possession.

J M Corrie 1930

The published siting falls on a level stance in the corner of a hillslope field. The site is vegetation-covered and apart from an 0.9m high oval stone clearance mound there is no evidence of stonework or foundations.

NX 6425 8173 to NX 6420 8166 A curvilinear earth and stone bank which crosses the field is approximately 90.0m long, spread to 4.0m and up to 0.6m high. It is obscured in parts by modern stone clearance heaps and is undateable, although it may be the "churchyard fence" noted by Barbour.

There is no local knowledge of either the inscribed stone or the axes. No further information was obtained about the Priest's House although a level featureless stance 8.5m by 6.0m at NX 6426 8165 may be the site suggested by Barbour.
