(NX 61838124) Martyr's Monument (NAT)

OS 6" map (1957)

This stone, lying on four small pillars, in the NW corner of Dalry churchyard, covers the grave of Robert Stewart of Ardoch and John Grierson, two Covenanters shot by Claverhouse in 1684 on Auchencloy farm. The long inscription (quoted in full in the ONB) is also noted in 1714, so the monument must have been erected before that date.

Name Book 1849; J H Thomson 1895

This well preserved gravestone is as described in the previous information. A stone at the foot of one of the pillars is inscribed "repaired in 1828".

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (TRG) 10 February 1978
