NMRS REFERENCE

(Area NX 656 742) The ivy-clad remains of Shirmers Castle stand on a high bank in the vicinity of Shirmers (NX 656 742). The greater part of the castle has been demolished, only small portions of the west and south wall remaining and not exceeding 10 to 12ft in height.

On plan it appears to have been an oblong measuring 21ft 3 ins in width over walls averaging 3ft 6ins in thickness. Indications of a west wall extend northwards for a distance of about 12ft 6 ins. At first floor level a scarcement projects 9 ins from the south wall which seems to prove that the castle was constructed with joists, not valted, but there is no other dating evidence although it is said to have been destroyed by fire in 1568.

It belonged to a branch of the Gordons of Kenmure.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911; M Harper 1908; J Barbour 1897

EXTERNAL REFERENCE

NX 6568 7424. The remains of Shirmers Castle (name verified by Mr A Thompson, Shirmers) are generally as described in the previous information. The scarcement on the south wall, however, is obscured by ivy and cannot now be identified.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (BS) 24 May 1977
