Archaeology Notes

NX67NE 4 c. 676 792

A hoard of silver pennies, deposited between 1261 and 1271, was discovered probably about 1924, while rough ground on Hazelrig (NX 676 792) was being levelled. They were thought to be tinsel discs at the time and were scattered, but seventy have been recovered, mostly Long-Cross Pennies of Henry III (1216-72) although there are three coins of Alexander III (1249-1286), an illegible long, double-cross sterling and a foreign sterling of John I, Duke of Brabant (1261-94). The exact number of coins found cannot be ascertained, and their present disposition is unknown.

J Davidson 1949; J Williams 1970.
