Archaeology Notes

NX65NE 14 6696 5692.

A Neolithic Cumbrian-type polished stone axe from Tongland parish was donated to the NMAS in 1868. It measures 7 3/4" by 2 3/4". (Acc No AF 28).

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1870; C I Fell 1964.

The label on this axe (NMAS exhibit) bears the almost illegible name 'Fairies' Well, Tongland', which is on the first ed. 6" map at NX 6696 5692; so it is possible that it was found in the vicinity of this well.

Information from OS Recorder (JD) 4 October 1973.

This axe has been petrologically attributed to group VI (objects of epidotized intermediate tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series from the Great Langdale and Scafell areas of Cumbria).

T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988.
