Archaeology Notes

NX64NW 24 62893 48303.

(NX 6289 4830) The present Borgue parish church was erected in 1814, the stones of its predessor being used in its construction. Its bell is dated 1712. The church, which was dedicated to St Andrew, was founded c 1100 according to Henderson, but this is unsubstantiated, the first mention being in 1170, when it was given to Dryburgh Abbey. The parishes of Senwick and Kirkandrews were annexed to Borgue in 1670.

G Hay 1957; J B Henderson 1898; H Scott 1917; 1950

The present church is still in use. No trace of the 12th century church survives and its site is not known. The dedication could not be confirmed.

Visited by OS (RD) 2 February 1971.
