(Name: NX 5120 5869) Supposed Site of (NAT) Battle (NR)
OS 6" map (1853)
A tract of arable land on Glenquicken farm which Capt Denniston, a noted antiquarian, says is pointed out as the supposed site of a battle fought between the Scots and English in 1312. This supposition is strengthened by the finding of large numbers of human bones when this land was cultivated 50 or 60 years ago, and in more recent times, and also from a small stream called the Englishman's Burn running through the S side of it.
Others suppose that the battle was fought in 1150, but Chalmers states that no such battle took place, and from the construction of cairns, the manner of interments found, and the remains of warlike instruments discovered suggest very ancient times.
Name Book 1850
In September 1868, when making drains on the verge of Glenquicken Moor, two iron spearheads and a bronze battle-axe were found, suggesting a battle here in 1154.
