(NX 4117 6126) Penninghame Kirk (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1957)

Location formerly entered as NX 4117 6126.

The ruins of the old parish church and manse and a graveyard, still in use in 1844 (Name Book 1844). The church was dedicated to St Ninian and is said to have been removed from Barwhirran (NS46SW 3) in the 15th c (Name Book 1845). The oldest date in the graveyard is 1550. A bell bearing the inscription "Campana Sancti Niniani de Penigham, M...." was associated with this church in 1684. Another parish church was erected in Newton Stewart in 1777 but whether this church was in use until that date has not been established.

NSA 1845 (S Richardson).

At the published site are the grass-covered footings of a rectangular building, 22.0m E-W by 9.0m, surviving to a maximum height of 1.0m. These remains are almost certainly those of the church. The graveyard is still in use, while the bell is believed to be in Kirkcudbright Museum.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 29 September 1966 and (BS) 16 July 1976.
