(NX 3661 8899) Cairn (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

The moss-covered remains of a cairn about 25 m in diameter, on which a sheep ree has been built. The outline of the cairn can be vaguely traced to the W of the ree but the area of the E has been planted with trees and no remains are visible although there are masses of stone beneath the turf. No stone is visible inside the ree.

Visited by OS (JLD) 18 November 1955

Only a slight stony scarp survives around the outside of the sheepfold on the W. The interior of the sheepfold has been planted with trees.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JP) 7 June 1976

Field Visit (July 1982)

Tarfessock NX 366 889 NX38NE

A cairn, measuring about 35m in diameter, is situated on a low rise in a forestry clearing 750m NNE of Tarfessock farmhouse. Its centre, which is occupied by an old sheepfold, has been almost entirely robbed of stone but on the W, where the ground falls away gently, the cairn material forms a stony scarp up to 1.4m high.

RCAHMS 1983, visited July 1982
