(NX 3009 5141) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A cairn or 'circular artificial mound about 54 feet in diameter and 3 feet high, with a slight bank around the edge of the top and a low mound in the centre. It is stony, of indeterminate character, but probably not very ancient.'

Name Book 1848; RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; D Phillips plan, undated

A grass-covered cairn in a field named Calf Fauld (Mrs Anderson, May Farm), measuring 17.0m E-W by 15.0m transversely and 1.0m in height. The top is slightly hollowed but there is no trace of a bank around its edge. Neither the cist nor kerbing, which feature on the plan, is visible.

This is probably another of the sites which the Marquis of

Bute excavated in 1942. The Marquis's niece can offer no additional information (Miss Stuart, Old Place of Mochrum).

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (BS), 5 July 1976.
