(NX 3003 5079) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A cairn, 54' in diameter, is reduced in height to about 5'.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; D Phillips plan, undated

NX 3003 5079. A partially grass-covered cairn 17.0m in diameter and 1.0m high situated on a slight knoll in undulating ground. It is no longer possible to identify any of the features shown on the plan except for two kerb stones on the SE. The excavation presumably took place in 1942 when the late Marquis of Bute dug into several cairns in this area (Mrs Anderson, May Farm). The Marquis's niece knows of no records relating

to the excavation (Miss Stuart, Old Place of Mochrum).

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (BS) 5 July 1976
