Archaeology Notes

NX35SW 14 3006 5088.

Cairn (No 2) near Brae House (NX 300 507).

D Phillips plan, undated

NX 3006 5088 This cairn is situated on a bracken covered rocky knoll. It measures 15.5m in diameter and 0.6m high and although overgrown it is just possible to make out the vague excavation trenches as shown on the plan. This excavation was presumably undertaken by the late Marquis of Bute in 1942 when he dug into several cairns in this area (Mrs Anderson, May Farm). His niece can offer no additional information (Miss Stuart, Old Place of Mochrum).

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (JD) 21 July 1976
