Archaeology Notes

NX35SW 12 3022 5098.

(Area NX 302 509) At the foot of the grass park, immediately N of Brae, is a grass-covered mound, probably a cairn. It is 45' in diameter and 5' high. Partly excavated.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; D Phillips plan, undated

NX 3022 5098 The grass-covered remains of a cairn 6.0m in diameter and 0.5m high with a well-defined kerb visible around its S edge. It is situated on top of a rocky knoll and the RCAHMS measurements apply to the natural feature and not the cairn which surmounts it.

Phillips' plan presumably dates from 1942 when the late Marquis of Bute excavated a number of cairns in this area (Mrs Anderson, May Farm). The marquis's niece can offer no additional information (Miss Stuart, Old Place of Mochrum).

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (BS) 5 July 1976
