OS 6" map (1957)

An oak, bearing an axe-mark was found in peat on the east shore of Fell Loch, opposite Fern Island, and a paved ford survived for a length of 20' to 25' next the island.

G Wilson 1873

Fern Island is a natural feature with no trace of artificial work about it. Just below the surface of the water however can be seen the slight remains of a causeway leading out to the island from the eastern shore of the loch.
