Archaeology Notes

NX28NW 4 2025 8641.

There was a "circular pit of considerable depth, lined with stone" near the Fardenreoch Cairn (NX28NW 5). No sizes are given (cf NS34SW 3).

J Smith 1895;

NX 2025 8641. Neither Mr Milroy, farmer of Fardenreoch, nor Miss Dunlop, daughter of the previous tenant, know of this pit. Close to the site of the cairn, on the bank above the Duisk, there are traces of a circle of stones, 0.8m in diameter. If this was the pit it has long been filled in, but it has been the same size as NS34SW 3 which is also sited by a river bank and has been classed as a probable "place of interment" but is more likely to have been a form of storage place.
