Archaeology Notes

NX26SW 34 2272 6152.

120m WSW of a large cairn on Carscreugh Fell (NX26SW 4) immediately to the E of the W branch of a small stream, is a slightly crescentic mound, up to 1m in height and measuring 10m E-W by 8m N-S. Differential vegetation makes the mound clearly visible from a distance, and at its W end where it is cut by the stream, it can be seen to contain small shattered stones.

Desk Based Assessment (July 2009 - February 2013)

A desk-based assessment and focused reconnaissance field survey have been carried out for the proposed wind farm. The assessment has been informed by comments and information supplied by Historic Scotland and the DGC Archaeologist.

Thirty eight sites of cultural heritage interest have been identified within the proposed wind farm area; sixteen of these being present within the focused field survey area around the proposed wind turbine locations. The majority of features recorded are associated with prehistoric activity and medieval or later rural settlement, and are judged to be of no more than low sensitivity and local historical environment interest.
