Archaeology Notes

NX26SE 5 264 637.

Pont shows a castle with trees on the S side of Loch Ronald on his map (circa 1600) M'Kerlie could find nothing regarding its history. Possibly this was Woodhill (name NX 2645 6373), described in the ONB as the ruins of an old stone building, at one time the residence of the Laird of Ronald.

Name Book 1845; P H M'Kerlie 1877.

Woodhill now falls within an area of afforestation. There are no remains to be seen and no local knowledge of a castle in the area.

Visited by OS (BS) 29 June 1976.
