(NX 2552 5245) Chambered Cairn (NR)

OS 1:10000 map (1982)

A chambered long cairn, possibly of the Clyde group, much-robbed and now grass-grown with many stones lying about its surface. The edges are well-defined by the limits of ploughing; they rise 4'or 5' and the rest of the cairn is flat at this level, except for several disturbed hollows. The main axis of the cairn lies ENE-WSW. The W end is crossed by a stone wall. W of this, the cairn has been removed. At the E end there has been a straight facade, five stones of which are visible. Near the NE corner is a stone, presumably part of a peristalith. The position of this and the facade suggest that the cairn now spreads 10' - 15' beyond its original limits. There have been at least six chambers in the cairn, constructed of large blocks, now almost buried in cairn material. The outer ends of the lateral chambers, as exposed, are all about 20' from the present edge of the cairn.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911; S Piggott and G Powell 1951; A S Henshall 1972, visited 1962.

This chambered cairn is as described by the previous authorities.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (JP), 30 June 1976.
