Archaeology Notes

NX24NE 13 2875 4908.

A stone circle, radius 24ft, on Low Moor (NX 28 48) has been excavated and planned. (D Phillips plan)

Information from A E Truckell, Dumfries Museum, 1968.

NX 2875 4908. Situated on level ground on the crest of a low ridge is an enclosure or hut circle of 10.0m internal diameter. The heather-covered stone wall varies from 1.5 to 3.0m in width and has two large stones set 1.0m apart in the E side, probably defining the entrance. The authorities consulted (A E Truckell and L Masters) were unable to supply any information about the excavation or the excavator.

Hut-Circle surveyed at 1:2500 scale.

To the NE is a field system consisting of several grassed-over clearance heaps, the largest being 6.0m diameter and 0.5m high in which at least one field can be recognised formed by low lynchets connecting the heaps.
