Archaeology Notes

NX16NE 14 164 677 to 165 679

(Area NX 163 676) The remains of two small cairns about 18 feet in diameter, almost reduced to ground level, and probably excavated.

RCAHMS 1912, visited 1911.

The cairns described by RCAHMS are probably two of a group of nine occupying a small area centred on NX 16426772. The best preserved is at NX 16446772 and measures 6.0m diameter by 0.4m high; a shepherd's cairn has been erected on its NW side. The remainder, grass-covered, vary in size from 3.0m to 4.5m in diameter.

These "cairns" are almost certainly stone clearance heaps. No evidence of field walls or lynchetting was seen.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 12 March 1968.

No change to previous field report.

Visited by OS (BS) 5 May 1976

There are about twenty cairns scattered along a low ridge in open moorland in the loop formed by the railway between New Luce and Barrhill where it turns off the valley of the Main Water of Luce and runs beside the Altigoukie Burn. The cairns measure 2m and 5m in diameter by 0.3m in maximum height. To the NW the scatter of cairns peters out on a gently sloping hillside littered with uncleared stones.

Two of the larger cairns at the S end of the group were noted in 1911.

RCAHMS 1987, visited (SH) 9 April 1986.
