This is a large stone in the wood south of the Lodge, with the word 'murder' cut on its surface. Traditionally this writing dates to before 1551, when the Gordons obtained possession of the lands of Portercherie; at this point a McCulloch killed his rival, the laird of Castle Clanyard.

The word 'Murder' has been incised on the upper face of a subrectangular boulder (0.9m long, 0.5m wide and 0.35m thick) set on top of a mound possibly a low cairn (0.3m high and 5m in diameter) 9.8m S of Ardwell Lodge. It is probably of 19th century date and is said to mark the spot where, somtime before 1551, a M'Culloch killed the Laird of Castle Clanyard.
