Archaeology Notes

NX14NW 11 10146 48565

A three-story mill complex in long range of rubble and slate, whitewashed. It ceased working as a meal mill in 1967 and in 1968 was used as a granary. Wheel at side (probably about 15ft in diameter by 3ft wide, overshot) was replaced by a turbine in 1945. Turbine in turn replaced by electric motor 1955. Large kiln in main range (about 20ft square) had square cast-iron plates and was last used in 1963. Internal machinery largely modern. The mill had four sets of stones, three being for meal, the other for beans. Formerly powered from mill-pond and lade.

I Donnachie 1971.
