Archaeology Notes

NX13NW 30 c. 13 36

A polished felstone axe, 9 1/2 ins in length by 2 3/4 ins across the cutting edge, 'from Culmore, Drummore, Wigtownshire' was purchased for the NMAS in 1912 (Drummore: NX 1336).

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1913

A polished stone axe from Drummore, in the NMAS (Acc No: AF 623) was attributed to the Great Langdale group of factories (Group VI) when petrologically examined. (Group VI comprises objects of epidotized intermediate tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series from the Great Langdale and Scafell areas of Cumbria).

Williams, however, locates this axe to Culmore, in Stoneykirk parish, at NX 102 521, a considerable distance from Drummore.) (See NX35NW 6 for other axes 'from Drummore'.
