Archaeology Notes

NX09NW 3 0164 9942

(NX 01649942) Seven graves were found in MacAnall's Cave and their positions indicated by rude crosses cut in the rock. The cave, about 200' long, is said to have been occupied for a considerable period by someone named MacAnall.

Name Book 1856.

Some years ago when the floor of MacNall's Cave was being cleared the labourers came across two stone coffins containing bones.

R Lawson 1895.

No further information. There is no local knowledge of the burials and the cave which is 40' ASL could not be visited owing to high tide.

Visited by OS (JLD), 4 October 1955.

Macanalls Cave, name confirmed, is about 50.0m long, straight, and rectangular in section with an average height of about 4.0m. Human habitation is feasible, but no trace of former occupation or antiquity was found, and the cut crosses mentioned by ONB were not located. The waterlogged and boulder strewn floor gave no indication of where the burials were found.

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (JRL), 5 May 1977.
