Archaeology Notes

NX08SE 11 097 822.

(Area NX 097 822) A fort is said to have occupied the summit of Moat or Moot Knowe (Name: NX 097 822), which is a small round elevated knoll, but no reliable information regarding it can be found.

Name Book 1856

A knoll with a small horse-shoe ridge round a hollow. Possibly the site of a cairn.

A F Gray 1956

'Mote Knowe' forms an outcrop on the edge of a west-facing spur at about 150 feet OD. The outcrop and vicinity show no trace of antiquity. There is evidence of small-scale quarrying, the dumped spoil giving the impression of a 'U' shaped rubble and earth bank. A shallow rectangular depression in grass, about 3m by 4m, probably indicates a former wooden structure, which from its position was almost certainly connected with the quarrying operations.

There is no local knowledge of a fortification or cairn on this knoll, and the location is unsuitable for defence with easy approaches from the E and S.
